The University of Alabama Rec Center became our new Hot Hundred event venue as of 2011. Staff members were extremely supportive during the planning stages… and last year’s ride and post ride meal, swimming, and overall hosting were outstanding! We’re looking forward to an even more superb day in 2013!!

The Community Mental Health Task Force
The Tuscaloosa Community Mental Health Task Force is a non-profit action team organized to provide a structured arena for addressing mental health issues, concerns and services in our community. The Task Force includes over 50 agencies, businesses and organizations that provide mental health, support, and outreach services. The structure includes a Steering Committee, and working sub-groups for Crisis Intervention, Children’s Services, Community Awareness, Housing, Returning Combat Veterans, and Fund Development. Through fundraisers such as the Hot Hundred Bicycle Ride, the Task Force can provide grants to members of the organization to assist an individual with medication or educational expenses or to provide a program or service to the community. We exist to work collaboratively with each other in identifying problematic areas in provision of services such as stigma, crisis care, and education, and to find solutions to these problems, through sharing of information and resources.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to positively affect the quality of life for persons with intellectual disabilities by helping to ensure that appropriate and quality services are available and accessible throughout their lifespan.
History
In the early 1990′s, interested people around the state began a concerted effort to improve services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In 1994, AAWA began operations as the Tuscaloosa Mental Retardation Authority, a public not for profit organizations authorized under Act 310 of the Alabama Legislature. The agency was established in response to the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities efforts to improve community based services to individuals in the Tuscaloosa area. Responsibilities included planning, coordination and monitoring of community based services. In 2003, the agency assumed responsibility for these services for Bibb and Pickens County. In 2004, the agency changed its name to Ability Alliance of West Alabama. This name changed occurred as a result of the request by individuals served to remove the offensive term “mental retardation” from our name.
